MOODY COUNTY, SOUTH DAKOTA — An 88-year-old man from Hendricks, Minnesota, and three girls from Flandreau, South Dakota, died in a three-vehicle crash on Interstate 29 after a pickup traveled the wrong direction, according to the South Dakota Highway Patrol. The crash happened at about 8:35 p.m. Monday, October 26, 2026, near mile marker 119, approximately 10 miles north of Colman. Preliminary information indicates the man was driving a 2020 Ford Ranger northbound in the interstate’s southbound lanes. A southbound 2003 Dodge Grand Caravan was passing a semi-truck when the van and pickup collided head-on, the Highway Patrol said. The semi then struck the Caravan and jackknifed. The Caravan’s 15-year-old driver and two passengers, ages 12 and 16, died. A fourth girl, also 12, was taken to a Sioux Falls hospital with life-threatening injuries. All four girls were from Flandreau. Authorities said all four occupants of the Caravan were ejected. The pickup driver was also ejected and died. The 59-year-old semi driver, from Arlington, South Dakota, was not injured. The Highway Patrol reported that the Caravan’s occupants and the pickup driver were not wearing seat belts. The semi driver was wearing one. Southbound I-29 was closed for approximately six hours. Authorities had not released the names of those involved in the official report reviewed for this article, citing pending family notifications.
