ST. PAUL MAN PRAISED AS HERO AFTER JUMPING ONTO MOVING SCHOOL BUS AND SAVING 18 CHILDREN DURING DRIVER’S MEDICAL EMERGENCY
ST. PAUL, MN — What could have ended in tragedy turned into an incredible story of courage and quick thinking Monday afternoon when a St. Paul man rushed onto a moving school bus after noticing the driver experiencing a medical emergency.
Ebro Ahmed is being praised for his actions after stepping in to stop a bus carrying 18 children in St. Paul’s Dayton’s Bluff neighborhood.
The frightening situation unfolded Monday afternoon, October 19, 2026, as students from Battle Creek Middle School were being transported home.
According to 5 EYEWITNESS NEWS, surveillance footage from Bricks Snacks and Tobacco captured Ahmed standing outside the business when he noticed something was seriously wrong with a passing school bus.
The bus was moving with its doors open, and the driver appeared to be experiencing a medical emergency.
Ahmed immediately sprang into action.
A SPLIT-SECOND DECISION THAT MAY HAVE SAVED 18 LIVES
Ahmed told reporters that he saw the bus rolling past him with its doors open and noticed the driver appeared to be seizing.
Realizing the bus was still moving with children aboard, Ahmed ran toward the vehicle and managed to climb inside.
Once aboard, he attempted to bring the bus to a stop.
Ahmed explained that he initially tried to shift the bus into park but accidentally shifted into reverse. He quickly corrected himself, shifted into neutral, and pulled the parking brake, successfully stopping the vehicle.
With the bus secured, Ahmed immediately contacted police and requested emergency medical assistance for the driver.
When officers arrived, Ahmed counted 18 children aboard the bus.
Fortunately, none of the students were injured.
The driver, who had suffered the medical emergency, is also expected to recover.
AN UNEXPECTED SOURCE OF KNOWLEDGE: GREY’S ANATOMY
Despite his remarkable response, Ahmed says he has no professional medical training.
Instead, he jokingly credited the popular television medical drama Grey’s Anatomy for some of his knowledge about handling emergencies.
But when asked about his actions, Ahmed made it clear that recognition was never his motivation.
His only concern was protecting the children and helping the driver.
“At the end of the day, youth are the most innocent humans on Earth, so anything you can do to save them, help them, it’s worth it,” Ahmed told 5 EYEWITNESS NEWS.
He also expressed gratitude that the emergency occurred in a neighborhood rather than on a busy highway, where the consequences could have been far more serious.
ST. PAUL PUBLIC SCHOOLS CONFIRMS INCIDENT
St. Paul Public Schools confirmed that a bus transporting students from Battle Creek Middle School experienced a medical emergency involving the driver.
Paramedics responded to assist, and another school bus was dispatched to pick up the students and complete their routes home.
The district also arranged for the school’s mental health team to check in with the children following the frightening experience.
ONE MAN’S ACTIONS MADE ALL THE DIFFERENCE
In a situation where every second mattered, Ahmed didn’t hesitate to help.
He saw a school bus moving without a driver who could safely operate it, recognized that children were in danger, and took immediate action.
His quick thinking helped prevent a potentially devastating crash and ensured that 18 children made it home safely.
Ahmed may not consider himself a hero, but to the families of those 18 students, his actions meant everything.
Thank you, Ebro Ahmed, for looking out for the children in your community. Your courage and willingness to help deserve recognition.
